DESCRIPTION

Setting

Description

The property contains a two-unit duplex. The larger section is the 2.5- story, 3-bay unit to the east (43 Leigh Avenue); the smaller section is the 2-story, 3-bay unit to the west (45 Leigh Avenue). The two sections are aligned on their main (south) elevation. 43 Leigh Avenue is the 2.5- story, 3-bay section to the east. Its key features are its hipped-roof dormer, hipped-roof front porch, and first floor bay. It features a hipped roof clad with asphalt shingles. At the south end of the ridge is a centered, hipped-roof dormer with a double-hung sash window; at the north end of the ridge is a stuccoed chimney. The house’s walls are clad in stucco. Windows appear to be historic units. On the main (south) elevation, the second floor features three 2x2 double-hung sash windows. The first floor has a replacement door in the west bay and a 3-panel bay to the east; each panel of the bay has a historic 1x1 window. A one-story porch extends along the entire south elevation; it features a hipped-roof supported by four, original, turned-wood posts with gingerbread brackets that are connected by a wood balustrade. The porch is accessed by an off- set wooden staircase with an iron balustrade. The east elevation features windows on the first and second floors. A frieze board runs along the top of the stuccoed walls. Windows are all historic 1x1 units. The second floor has four units; the first floor has a paired window in the center, flanked by single windows. The house’s foundation is clad in stucco. 43 Leigh Avenue is a 2-story, 3-bay vernacular section facing south. Its main feature is its Italianate-like first floor cornice. The section features a truncated-hipped roof clad with asphalt shingles and metal. The section is clad in stucco. Some of the section's windows and all of its doors are replacements. The first floor of the south elevation features an Italianate-like, full-length, wood cornice between the first and second floors, an open, three- quarters-length, wood porch, and a centered front door. The porch is accessed by a center wooden staircase that leads to the front door and that has a double, iron balustrade. The porch features a wood balustrade. The front door is recessed and flanked on both sides by one, replacement, single, 1x1 double-hung sash window. The second floor has two, original, single, 2x2 double-hung sash windows centered over the windows on the first floor. The west elevation features one, exterior, brick chimney. There is a one-story, shed-roof addition on the north (back) elevation of this half of the twin. The section’s foundation is clad in stucco.

History

The building was constructed in the 1920s. Historic maps show a vacant lot here as late as the Sanborn Atlas of 1918. The first cartographic evidence of the houses is found in the historic aerial of 1940, which shows both houses. A lady ran a candy shop here that was a popular place for children in the 1950s.
