Description |
The two story rectangular building on a raised foundation has its long
axis parallel to John Street, and main entrance on the north (Maclean St)
facade. There is a shallow hip roof behind a corbelled ornamental
parapet. The main entrance is centered under a small bracketed gabled rch
roof above the double stair with flights against the facade. There is
also a basement entrance centered under the main. Two pairs of one over
one windows flank the entrance at each level. There is a centered Masonic
plaque at the second floor level. The south elevation is five bays with a
second entrance in the far right bay. The windows on this facade are
single units. The north side has four bays corresponding with the south
facade. The last bay (left side) is smaller windows related to an
interior stair. The second opening from the right on the second floor is
a door to a fire escape. There are two basement windows in the rightmost
bays. |

History |
The building was constructed in 1924. The Elks lodge purchased this
property and met in an earlier building which burned in 1924. The Elks
constructed the current building in that year; it does not appear on the
Sanborn atlas of 1918 but does appear on the Franklin Survey atlas of 1930.
The Masonic lodge purchased the building in the 1940s and have owned it
since that time; the property was in the process of being sold at the time
of the survey in 2015. |
