DESCRIPTION

Setting

Description

The house is a 2-story vernacular building facing south to Birch Avenue. It has a front end gabled orientation; the roof is clad with asphalt shingles and features a small chimney near the north end of the ridge. The eaves are wood-clad. The house's frame walls are clad with aluminum siding. Windows are original 6x1 double hung sash units, with inoperable shutters on the main (south) elevation. The attic window on the main elevation is a 3x3 unit that also features inoperable shutters. The house has four bays on the south elevation and three on the side walls. A full- length front porch extends along the entire south elevation; it has a hipped roof clad with asphalt shingles supported by four unfluted columns that are partially connected by a simple railing. Below the porch are doors in the center bays, flanked by windows. A set of four concrete steps leads down from the porch to the grade of the front lawn. The house has a concrete foundation with horizontal basement windows.

History

The house was constructed c. 1925. Historic maps indicate that the property was vacant as late as the Sanborn atlas of 1918. The first indication of the house is the historic aerial of 1940, which shows the building (as do all subsequent historic aerials). Note: the historic atlas of 1930 does not document houses along Birch Avenue.
