DESCRIPTION

Setting

Description

The house is a 2.5-story American Foursquare facing south to Birch Avenue; among its key features are its pyramidal roof and hipped dormer. The house's pyramidal roof is clad with asphalt shingles and features extended wood eaves. Hipped roof dormers are located on the south, east, and west slopes of the roof. The house's walls are brick. Windows are replacement 1x1 double hung sash units. The house has three bays on the south elevation and two on the side walls. The door is a replacement unit on the main (south) elevation near the southwest corner; it has a five-light inserted fanlight held by a doorlite rim over vertical panels. The house has a stucco-clad foundation.

History

The house was constructed c. 1919. This property was part of the Albert Leigh farm until World War I. The Sanborn Atlas of 1918 shows a surviving agricultural outbuilding from the Leigh farm. The US Census of 1920 indicates that an engineer was living in the house (using the address 33 Birch). The first indication of the house is the historic aerial of 1940, which shows the building (as do all subsequent historic aerials). Note: the historic atlas of 1930 does not document houses along Birch Avenue.
