DESCRIPTION

Setting

Description

This house is a two-and-a-half-story, two-bay, conservative Colonial Revival building and its main features are its slate roof, brick quoins, rubble-stone façade, open-bed pedimented front-gable porch, and brick chimneys. It features a side-gable roof that is clad with polychromatic slate shingles and that has wood eaves. There is one, exterior, brick chimney on each gable end. The first floor of the house is constructed of rubble-stone and features brick quoins. The second floor of the house is clad in stucco. All of the house’s doors are replacements. The first floor of the south (front) elevation features an open-bed pedimented front- gable, wood portico with a central front door. The portico is accessed by a concrete staircase with a double, low, concrete parapet. It features two, square, wooden columns. The front door is flanked on either side by four- pane half-sidelights with a fanlight above. To the east of the door unit there is one, single, six-over-one, double-hung sash window and to the west of the door unit there is one, single, six-over-one, double-hung sash window. On the second floor, there are two, single, six- over-one, double- hung sash windows one more or less centered over each of the windows on the first floor.

History

The house was constructed c. 1930. Historic maps and Sanborn Atlases show a vacant parcel in this location as late as 1918. [The historic atlas of 1930 does not cover Birch Avenue.] The house first appears on the historic aerial of 1940 and appears on all subsequent historic aerials.
