DESCRIPTION

Setting

Description

The building on the property is a front end gabled vernacular house facing north. Key features of the house include its original windows and front porch. The building's front end gabled roof features a molded cornice with returns on the front (north) end. The house has a semi- engaged and shouldered brick chimney on the west elevation near the northwest corner and a small concrete chimney on its south wall near the southwest corner. The walls are stuccoed. Fenestration consists of original 4x1 double hung sash windows, many of which are paired. The main elevation features a paired attic window; a single and paired window on the second floor, and the door and a paired window on the first floor. Windows feature wide wood surrounds, and the first floor window has undersized shutters. The door is an original unit with six inset lights above the lockrail. The front porch is also original; it has a nearly flat, hipped roof with a thick entablature supported by three square Tuscan columns connected by a simple railing with square balusters. A brick set of stairs leads down from the porch to the grade of the front lawn.

The west elevation is a stuccoed wall with windows on the first and second floor levels. These windows include some paired units and some single units, plus a 3-part casement on the first floor. The concrete foundation has a 3-light horizontal basement window.

The east elevation is a stuccoed wall with asymmetrical fenestration. The second floor has a single window near the southeast corner. The first floor has a small window near the southeast corner and a window near the northeast corner. A side door opens onto a mezzanine level between the basement and the first floor.

The small garage in the rear of the lot is a 1-story, 1-bay building consisting of concrete walls with a large garage door on the main (north) elevation.

History

The house was constructed c. 1920. Historic maps and atlases show a vacant lot in this location as late as the Sanborn atlas of 1918. The Franklin Survey atlas of 1930 does not document properties north of Leigh Avenue. The house first appears on the historic aerial of 1940 and appears on all subsequent aerials.
